Indonesia is planning to include the maritime sector in the greenhouse gas emissions-reduction pledge, aiming to finalize the second nationally determined contribution (NDC) document by August this year. The new NDCs will focus on cutting emissions in the marine sector, particularly through the conservation of coastal ecosystems like mangroves and seagrass beds. This mark the first time the maritime sector will be included in Indonesia’s NDCs, alongside existing sectors such as forest and land use, energy, waste, agriculture, and industrial processes.
Additionally, Indonesia aims to reduce emissions from activities in sector derivatives, such as limiting hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) emissions from oil and gas production, while improving climate transparency frameworks. However, challenges remain, including the need for more ambitious targets and addressing emissions from the downstream sector and deforestation caused by mining activities.
