Impressive Strides Made in Taiwan’s Offshore Wind Power Development with 2.25GW Installed

The Ministry of Economic Affairs announced Taiwan’s offshore wind power development in 2023, with the completion of 2.25 gigawatts (GW) in installed wind farms, surpassing other democratic countries in the Asia-Pacific and being among the few worldwide with over 2 GW of offshore wind power capacity.

However, global factor such as COVID-19 and geopolitical shifts has impacted offshore wind power development in various countries, including Taiwan, where limited construction periods of 6-7 months annually and effects from typhoons influenced the 2023 installation progress. Despite these challenges, the Ministry of Economic Affairs highlighted the continuous efforts of the work team, achieving the installation goal of 2.25 GW by the end of the 2023 with the completion of 283 wind turbines.

Offshore wind power is considered a crucial green energy initiative for Taiwan’s energy transition, with collaborative plans aiming to install 314-374 wind turbine units by 2024, targeting a total installed capacity of 2.56-3.04 GW. At the close of 2023, renewable energy surged to a historic high, with the proportion of wind an solar energy generation reaching 35.45%, surpassing a coal-fired power generation and demonstrating a positive trend in clean energy development.
